Dog and Cat Teeth Cleaning for a Healthy Mouth and Longer Life

Dental disease is the most common disease in both cats and dogs. It causes not only pain and discomfort, but it will affect your pet’s overall health if left untreated. However, with regular dog and cat teeth cleaning, this prevalent disease can be completely avoided. At DePorre Veterinary Hospital, we serve Bloomfield pets with advanced dental care and will help you establish an at-home care plan, too.

Our Dog and Cat Teeth Cleaning Procedures

Our veterinarians and technicians are trained in dog and and cat teeth cleaning procedures that help to prevent and even reverse the damage of plaque and tartar. However, to give your pet the best clean, it’s necessary to use anesthesia. We use the safest anesthesia protocols for your pet including pre-anesthetic blood work and extensive monitoring during the procedure. Additionally, we always perform digital dental X-rays to fully examine the teeth below the gumline. This helps us to assess the extent of damage from dental disease and determine whether extractions are necessary.

During a dog and cat teeth cleaning procedure, we perform:

  • Ultrasonic scaling to remove tartar from every tooth
  • Polishing of every tooth to prevent future tartar build-up
  • A full oral examination including digital dental X-rays to assess teeth below the gumline
  • Extractions of diseased or damaged teeth, if needed

Dog and Cat Teeth Cleaning Home Care

There's a lot you can do for your pet’s oral health at home. Brushing their teeth daily is the single most effective way to prevent tartar build-up. However, brushing can be a challenge for busy people with uncooperative pets! It’s still worth a try, but if your pet simply doesn’t take to it, we will recommend other options. Dental care can involve any of the following including:

  • Dental chews
  • Water additives
  • Dental chew toys
  • Dental diets

We recommend products approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Visit vohc.org for a full list of approved products.

Book an appointment online or call us at (248) 646-1669 today for your dog or cat’s teeth cleaning! We'll also talk to you about your pet dental care options at home including techniques for brushing and which other products will work best for you and your pet.
